Acid reflux is a common ailment that gives you a burning pain, also called heartburn. It happens in the lower chest area when the acid in the stomach flows back into the food pipe. As per the name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart.
GERD also called Gastroesophageal reflux disease, is detected when acid reflux occurs more than 2 times in a week. The chronic heartburn sensation can lead to severe complications further.
What causes acid reflux?
Our stomach contains hydrochloric acid, it is a strong acid that helps break down
the food and protect us against bacterias. The lining on the stomach is
especially accustomed to protect itself from any powerful acid, but the
esophagus is not.
The sphincter acts as a valve that allows the food into the stomach but not backs up into the esophagus. But when the sphincter fails, and stomach contents reiterate into the esophagus, you have the feeling of heartburn.
What are the Symptoms of acid reflux?
1. Produces heartburn, whether it is a single episode or persistent.
2. An uncomfortable burning sensation in the esophagus also felt behind the breastbone area.
3. Worsens when you lie down or bend over.
4. Can last for hours and worsen after having meals.
5. The heartburn pain may move up to the neck and throat creating a sour or bitter taste.
6. If the heartburn persists for more than 2 times in a week, it is known as GERD.
To
get medical advice on this, you need to visit a gastroenterologist. They are specialized
in treating problems related to digestive disorders. A gastro doctor treats
problems related to gallbladder, biliary tract disease, nutritional
problems, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and
pancreatitis.
